The Qashqai are a confederation of tribes based in the Fars province in southwest Persia. They are most renowned for their colorful and finely woven rugs, carpets and trappings such as the mafrash, or bedding bag. Collectors have found creative ways to display these beautifully woven items and this bench is a hybrid of sorts - the bottom portion shows the mafrash as it was originally intended, but the top is crowned with a small Qashqai gabbeh rug. It makes a "double-barreled" accent piece that displays the flowering of Qashqai tribal weaving.
