The Nataraj is the Lord of Dance, a form of the Hindu god Shiva who performs a divine dance to destroy the weary universe for god Brahma to create it anew. Sculptures of Nataraj are often made in bronze with Shiva dancing in an aureole of flames. There are two forms of Shiva's dance: the gentle Lasya for the creation of the world and the violent Tandava for the destruction of the weary world. They represent the two aspects of Shiva's nature — one who destroys in order to create.
